1. Statutory Vehicle Inspections
The most critical part of the job is ensuring vehicles are roadworthy.
Fitness Certificates (CF): Conduct thorough physical and mechanical inspections of commercial vehicles (buses, trucks, taxis) to issue or renew Fitness Certificates. This involves checking the chassis, braking systems, engine health, and structural integrity.
Registration Inspection: For new vehicles, you verify that the engine and chassis numbers match the documents and that the vehicle mirrors the manufacturer's approved specifications.
Emissions Compliance: Ensure vehicles meet the prevailing BS (Bharat Stage) norms to control environmental pollution.
2. Enforcement & Road Safety
MVIs have the authority to enforce the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and state-specific rules.
On-Road Checks: "Raids" or routine checks to catch overloaded vehicles, those operating without valid permits, or vehicles with illegal modifications.
Seizure & Compounding: If a vehicle is found in gross violation of safety norms, we have the power to impound it or fines (compounding fees).
Accident Investigation: When a serious road accident occurs, MVI (Technical) are often called by the police to perform a Technical Inspection of the involved vehicles to determine if a mechanical failure (like brake failure) contributed to the crash.
3. Licensing & Testing
Driving Tests: M.V.I (Technical) supervise or conduct the practical driving tests for applicants seeking a Permanent Driving License (DL).
School/Public Awareness: MVI's often lead road safety campaigns, educating the public and transport operators about traffic rules and safe driving practices.
4. Administrative & Regulatory Duties
Permit Verification: Checking the validity of National and State permits for transport vehicles.
Revenue Collection: M.V.I's inspections are the "clearance" required for the government to collect various taxes and fees.
Court Evidence: As a technical expert, Our inspection reports are legal documents that can be used as evidence in motor accident claim tribunals or criminal courts.
